Fashion Flashback: 1980's Flashdance

I am rocking the 80’s color pallet of purple, pink and light blue today! The necklace is IOSSELLIANI (of course!). The length of this necklace is so flattering – it hits right on the collar bone. Perfection. The off-the-shoulder “Madrona” shirt was a Dustin experiment that I normally sleep in but that I had to wear today (comfortable!). I saved it from the garbage and cut the neck and arms. We still have the small pink fedora by Kelly Christy! Someone needs to snap this up before summer is over. It is adorable – a men’s silhouette in a girly color. LOVE it! The size is great for most people that have tried it on in the store.

Pink and red (that color combo is not used enough!) bracelet by IOSSELLIANI (right hand) and silver latch bracelet by Eddie Borgo (hard to see). Even my J.Crew shoes seem to read 80’s with this outfit!

wrist

Classic white druzy quartz and sterling silver ring by Hitchcock Madrona. I am also wearing a Hitchcock Madrona pink tourmaline and diamond one-of-a-kind cocktail ring.

Signature Piece: Eddie Borgo Cone Bracelet

Posted by & filed under Signature Piece, Uncategorized.

Some of our favorite lines that we carry at Hitchcock Madrona continually revisit certain pieces in their collections. These pieces have become so closely identified with those brands that they have evolved into the lines’s signature pieces; Eddie Borgo’s cone bracelet is one such example. As regular blog readers know, he is one of our all-time favorite designers and we LOVE the cone bracelet. It is the perfect combination of classic and timeless with an edge.

Indebted to the punk culture as exemplified by New York City in the ’70s and ’80s, Eddie’s take on the cone bracelet is a luxed-up take on the now iconic punk look. While his cone bracelet has retained the spirit that is so identified with this movement, Borgo’s piece is easily wearable and its style is timeless while still being very of-the-moment.

housecone

We have two different versions of the cone bracelet. The first is his original design and it’s comprised totally of cones. It’s a little bolder and makes more of a statement when worn on its own. However, it is still subtle enough that it can be easily layered and pairs perfectly with either fine jewelry or more dramatic pieces. Eddie made a second cone bracelet, which features only one cone on a chain – it’s a little more delicate than the other version and very wearable.

At the moment we have Eddie Borgo cone bracelets IN STOCK in silver, rose gold and yellow gold.  An essential for your jewelry collection!

Just In: Crystal Hartman Arrows

Posted by & filed under Just In, Uncategorized.

New Crystal Hartman jewelry is in store and it’s amazing! The collection prominently features arrows, which got us thinking about Cupid, the Greek god who shot both humans and his fellow gods alike with his arrows. Cupid’s arrows immediately sparked passionate feelings of DESIRE in his targets and they would immediately fall head-over-heels for the first living thing that came across their path. Buyer beware: wearing Hartman’s jewelry (pun intended) you just might find yourself the object of such intense attraction!

earrings

Cupid (or Eros in Latin) was the son of Aphrodite (or Venus), the goddess of love. Initially depicted in Greek art as a slender youth, he himself fell victim to his infamous arrows in the Greek myth Cupid and Psyche.  However, from the Hellenistic period onwards, Cupid has generally been portrayed as a chubby child or as a baby. He has remained a popular artistic subject for millennia and was the inspiration for the putti, chubby male babies who were often winged and were commonly featured in paintings, sculpture, architecture and other media during the Renaissance and the Baroque periods.

There’s nothing overly cutesy about Hartman’s jewelry – it’s edgy and cool while still being romantic.  She has cast diamonds into the tips and/or ends of the arrowheads just for us at Hitchcock Madrona. We love her use of diamonds – they are a hidden treat for you to discover within the design.

Today, Cupid is an iconic figure and of course there is the annual resurgence in his popularity around Valentine’s Day. It’s probably no coincidence then, given the mythical power of arrows, that we’re IN LOVE with Crystal’s new jewelry!

Each piece in the collection is one-of-a-kind and would make an amazing gift for the object of YOUR desire.

Obsession: Emeralds

Posted by & filed under Obsession, Uncategorized.

We are loving all things emerald this month! Maybe it’s because we have so many good designs incorporating this fantastical stone (Kryptonite anyone?). What makes an emerald so amazing? The bright, almost glowing color is the first thing I usually notice about a good quality emerald.  The next is the cut – has to be emerald! Since emeralds are technically the most included gemstone (“included” refers to the naturally occurring crystals or other substances that are present within the stone and that affect its clarity), the internal fissures and inclusions are regarded as the “garden” of the stone. A good quality emerald has a clear garden; basically, most of the stone is clear and not murky. We have never had the opportunity to purchase a great quality emerald because they are so rare (even more rare than a clear diamond!). So, when our favorite stone supplier pulled this out we didn’t even have to think! The setting is solid 18k gold and inspired by our love for all things vintage.

ring

Emerald, diamond and 18K gold ring by Hitchcock Madrona. The emerald is of astounding quality and just over 2.5 carats. It is flanked by champagne rose cut diamonds (large ones) and four tiny white sparklers. This is THE BEST item in the store at the moment – please, somebody POP THE QUESTION with this stunner!

Kate is also rocking a Ikat scarf as a turban (of course) and a Hitchcock Madrona double strand necklace over her forehead (again, of course!).  The cocktail rings are all one-of-a-kind and diamond. Her (own) simple 18k gold 1/2 ring is also Hitchcock Madrona.

Inspiration: Jewelry on your Wedding Day

Posted by & filed under Inspiration, Iosselliani, Lulu Frost, Mariella Pilato, Uncategorized.

What does a “modern bride” wear on her big day? This is a question that I have been thinking about a lot this spring and summer while creating custom wedding necklaces for a myriad of different brides. I find that during every consultation we walk the fine line of being fashionable and cool without risking the dreaded dated photos in twenty years. So, what should you wear??

multi

First, you have to decide what kind of bride you are. The location and vibe of your wedding are the biggest hints. Are you on a beach? On a farm? Is the reception in a ballroom? Then we can decide: you are organic/effortless, simple/rustic, or Cinderella (that was me!) and we can gear our search toward materials that are cohesive to your vibe. Above, the Lulu Frost rhinestone earrings and necklace scream vintage/formal wedding. I picture them with a more traditional princess (in a good way) dress.

neck

By contrast, this rock crystal necklace designed by Mariella Pilato is perfect for a more organic setting like the woods, a farm or even the beach.

In order to keep the look classic you CAN wear a statement piece of jewelry but limit it to one. If your bracelet is the IOSSELLIANI bangle (above at the very top of the post) then wear diamond studs and no necklace (maybe something in your hair?). Always keep taste and proportion in mind. If you think that you might be getting too crazy then reel it in (on your wedding day). You can wear your combat boots, tutu, and cowboy hat every other day of your life.

Outfit of the Day: Summer Sporty Beaded Fun-Fun

Posted by & filed under Iosselliani, Kelly Christy, OOTD, Pamela Love, Uncategorized.

neck

This summer I have gravitated toward a few different styles of dress. Both are departures from my normal personal style. The first is Native American (feeling) jewelry! Pamela Love staples, vintage Navajo sterling, turquoise everything, and beaded pieces are easily layered with my Hitchcock Madrona favorites. This red beaded number is really all I want to wear! I am also wearing a rhinestone collar by IOSSELLIANI, random vintage brass chains and an enamel skull necklace from Hot Topic (remember that store?). Dustin and I like to call this type of necklace menagerie “fun-fun”. Like in India, “should we buy these colorful bangles just for fun-fun?”. Speaking of colorful bangles, that is one on my right arm. We still have loads left to stack!

ericacu

My other summer wardrobe fascination is sporty and/or collegiate men’s t-shirts. I know, random! They are usually from thrift stores with teams that I have never heard of (ie Lynden Lyons – who??).  This particular shirt was a total score at Value Village. It just says “COLLEGE” a la Jim Belushi in Animal House (I am assuming). I love the general reference (or recommendation) to higher education and at the same time the irreverence of blowing it off. Every outfit benefits from a hat by Kelly Christy – this style works for men and women. I am awaiting my custom hat that I ordered from Kelly during the trunk show – until then I will just have to wear all of the ones in the store! I will post about my hat and the custom process as soon as it is ready. I can’t wait! Custom is the best for hats and it is usually cost prohibitive and difficult but not here!

Silver arrowhead cuff by Pamela Love and gold plated cone bracelet (this is never leaving my wrist) by Eddie Borgo.

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer!
